Dr. Chakravarthy better known to her patients and colleagues as Dr. Bapsi Chak, is a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Following a residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, she completed a fellowship in Medical Oncology at the University of Maryland and Radiation Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University. She is board certified in both radiation oncology and medical oncology. She specializes in treating cancers of the breast and gastrointestinal tract. As a busy clinician with a strong interest in applied science, she collaborates with basic scientists as well as imaging scientists to learn better ways of treating cancers. She works with surgeons and medical oncologists as part of a multidisciplinary team to design clinical trials that will apply the knowledge learned in our laboratories to the care of our patients. She has collaborated closely with imaging scientists to develop clinical trials to develop imaging markers of treatment response. She has worked with basic scientists to identify triple negative subtypes. These have resulted in multiple high impact publications. On a national level, she serves as Chair of the Radiation Oncology Committee of Eastern Cooperative Group-American College of Radiology Imaging Network where she helps to design the next generation of cancer clinical trials involving radiation.
