Dr. Austin Kirschner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He is a board-certified radiation oncologist with a national profile in the use of radiotherapy for benign and functional conditions. He was the senior author for the 2022 Red Journal review article that re-invigorated interest in the USA for low dose radiotherapy for osteoarthritis.
Dr. Kirschner earned his MD and PhD from Northwestern University and completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at Vanderbilt. In addition to his work in cancer care, he has led and mentored clinical research initiatives exploring low-dose radiotherapy (LDRT) for osteoarthritis and other nonmalignant diseases. He is the senior investigator for the largest USA-based multi-institutional prospective cohort studying low dose radiotherapy for osteoarthritis.
He currently serves on the ASTRO Functional Radiation Medicine Committee (Benign Musculoskeletal Group), the ARS Appropriate Use Criteria Committee for Radiotherapy for Benign Disease, and the ACR-ARS Practice Parameter Committee for Radiation Therapy in Benign Musculoskeletal Conditions.
