Dr. Brandon J. Nelson is an Imaging Physicist and AI Evaluations Expert serving as a Staff Fellow at the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Division of Imaging, Diagnostics, and Software Reliability. His career focuses on medical imaging, deep learning, and regulatory affairs, with an emphasis on developing and evaluating innovative AI-driven medical technologies. At the FDA, he investigates performance disparities of AI-enabled devices in pediatric radiology and serves as a regulatory consultant for device submissions.


Dr. Nelson earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and a BA in Physics from Carleton College. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including the FDA Critical Path Award for his research developing synthetic data to assess pediatric AI device performance and an FDA Individual Incentive Award for "Outstanding External Communication Efforts". His research on the pediatric-specific evaluations of deep learning in CT imaging and the use of synthetic data has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, such as Medical Physics and the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
