Catherine Spina, MD, PhD is physician-scientist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center committing 80% of time to basic and translational research and the remaining 20% of my time to caring for patients as a genitourinary radiation oncologist. Her laboratory focuses on elucidating the mechanisms and therapeutic implications of immune modulation by tumor irradiation. One area of focus is the expansion of suppressive myeloid cells in the tumor microenvironment, a subset of the innate immune cells that drive therapy resistance. We seek to define these suppressive changes driven by tumor irradiation and develop novel therapies to combine with radiation and other immunotherapies to maximizing clinical benefit. She also serves as a member of the NRG Oncology GU Core Committee, Translational Science and Radiation Oncology Committees.
