Cira Mollings Puentes, MD, BS
“If it can be measured, it can be improved.” This is the daily maxim for Cira Mollings Puentes, a rising 4th year medical student at UT Southwestern Medical Center and the Dean’s Research Scholar in Quality Improvement for 2021-2022. Her journey towards oncology stemmed from a deep fascination with Biochemistry at Bates College, where she produced two publications on cyclodextrin molecules. As a second year medical student, her quality improvement project on hemorrhage was presented at this years ACOG conference. Since then, her focus has been on gynecological cancer treatment and prevention. Cira is currently working with Dr. Chika Nwachukwu and Dr. Kevin Albuquerque on projects focused on cervical cancer and HPV subtypes. She has been involved in multiple aspects of patient care as an advisor for support groups at the Dempsey Center (Lewiston, Maine) and also at the Giamala Foundation (San Jose, Costa Rica). Cira’s dedication to quality improvement is derived from a belief that high quality processes should exist in all aspects of patient care.
