Edward Lloyd Trimble, MD, MPH

National Cancer Institute
Rockville, MD

In 2018, Dr. Norman Sharpless, then Director of the US NCI/NIH, nominated Dr. Trimble to lead the US government’s participation in the global initiative for cervical cancer control. This role builds on Dr. Trimble’s previous position as the founding Director of NCI/NIH’s new Center for Global Health (CGH), to which he was appointed by then NCI/NIH Director Dr. Harold Varmus. Under Dr. Trimble’s leadership the NCI/NIH CGH became the coordinating point for NCI/NIH’s work to strengthen global cancer research, to train global cancer researchers, and to help translate research into policy for cancer control.

From 1991 to 2011 Dr. Trimble worked in NCI/NIH’s Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis, with responsibility for NCI/NIH-sponsored treatment trials in gynecologic cancer, as well as cancer trials for the elderly, adolescents and young adults, international collaboration in cancer clinical trials, and strengthening assessment of PRO and HRQOL in cancer trials. He spearheaded the NCINIH’s Clinical Announcements regarding chemoradiation for cervical cancer and intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. For his work at the US NCI/NIH Dr. Trimble has received two Public Health Service Commendation Medals, six NIH Merit Awards, and the NCI/NIH Director’s Gold Star Award.

Dr. Trimble graduated from Harvard University (BA), the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine (MD) and Public Health (MPH). He trained in obstetrics/gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as in gynecologic oncology, by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
