Havell Markus is a fourth-year MD/PhD candidate at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania, applying to radiation oncology residency programs this cycle. He completed the PhD portion of his training in Bioinformatics and Genomics under Drs. Dajiang Liu and Laura Carrel, developing statistical genetics methods to characterize X-chromosome inactivation escape and model progression from preclinical to clinical autoimmune disease, including lupus. Before medical school, he earned an MPhil in Computational Biology from the University of Cambridge under Dr. Nitzan Rosenfeld and worked as an Associate Bioinformatician at the Translational Genomics Research Institute under Dr. Muhammed Murtaza, studying plasma and urine cell-free DNA as biomarkers for cancer detection. He graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University's Barrett Honors College, where he received the Dean's Medal in Molecular Sciences. His honors include an NIH F30 Individual Predoctoral MD/PhD Training Fellowship and recognition as a top finalist for the American Society of Human Genetics' Pre-Doctoral Trainee Research Excellence Award. He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Nature Communications, Cell Genomics, and Science Translational Medicine. He is now applying his quantitative training to radiation oncology, with a long-term goal of using multi-omic and clinical data to personalize radiation treatment.
