Helen Shih, MD, MS, FASTRO, MPH
Helen A. Shih, MD is a radiation oncologist with multiple interest in clinical care, research, education, and administrative leadership. She is a Professor of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Her clinical practice comprises of patients with both malignant and benign CNS and ocular tumors. Her research interests reflect her patient population, and specifically with interest to improve patient care and outcomes, reduce radiation treatment related toxicity, and to advance radiotherapy tools with specific attention to the role of proton therapy. She is the Medical Director of the MGH Proton Therapy Centers. She is also an advocate for education of every level of medical training for physicians and other staff alike. She previously served as the departmental medical school clerkship director, residency program director, and proton fellowship director. She enjoys mentorship and teaching of trainees, junior faculty, and colleagues alike. Between 2011–2016, she served as the Associate Senior Editor and then Senior Editor of the CNS section of the Red Journal. She is currently the CNS Chair of the scientific program at the ASTRO Annual Meeting. She leads the current ASTRO effort of radiation therapy guidelines for management of IDH-mutant gliomas and contributes to the ASCO guidelines for management of gliomas. She has previously led the ACR/ASTRO guidelines for use of proton radiation therapy. Beyond radiation oncology, Dr. Shih has a second passion in drug addiction, spanning education to destigmatize, prevention, community leadership, and research.
