John T. Butler, MD, PhD is currently Chief Resident in Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to joining UCSD, John attended the University of Rhode Island before receiving additional training at RI School of Medical Technology to become a certified Clinical Laboratory Scientist. He has worked in molecular diagnostics and transfusion medicine labs at RI Hospital, and as a research engineer in the lab of Jeanne Bentley Lawrence at UMASS Medical School. In 2015, John joined the Medical Scientist Training Program at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR, earning a PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2020 and an MD in 2022. After graduating, he completed his internship at Providence Sacred Heart in Spokane, WA, before moving to San Diego to continue training in Radiation Medicine. In 2026, he completed an Aerospace Medicine Clerkship with NASA at Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. His research is focused on understanding radiation toxicity and improving access to radiotherapy in rural and remote regions. As a Radiation Oncologist, John’s ultimate goal is to bring academic-level cancer care and the power of the “golden ray” to small towns—just like the one he came from.
