Lois Okereke, PhD Headshot

Lois Okereke, PhD

MD Anderson Cancer Center
Houston, TX

Lois Okereke, Ph.D. is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Radiation Oncology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (UTMDACC), Houston, where she is applying mathematical techniques to develop novel patient-specific radiation protocols for improved response and outcome, based on clinical radiation response modeling for HPV-related cancers. Prior to joining UTMDACC, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Computational Oncology, where she identified optimal therapeutic regimens for brain and breast cancers by exploiting nullclines in the systems of differential equations describing tumor growth and treatment response. She received her PhD in Pure and Applied Mathematics from the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, in November 2022, after completing a split-site PhD carried out between the Mathematics Institute at AUST, Abuja, and the Institute of Systems Molecular and Integrative Biology at the University of Liverpool, England. During this time, she had extended research visits to the Computational Biology and Integrative Genomics laboratory at Oxford and the Statistical Modelling Laboratory at Senegal’s Gaston Berger University. Her research develops and synergizes mathematical and computational tools from nonlinear operator theory, dynamical systems, probability theory and machine learning to study and characterize cancer development and progression, so as to optimize patient-specific cancer therapies. Lois Okereke is a finalist of the 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards at the Scientific Interface, a laureate of the 2021 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Young Talent Award sub-Saharan Africa, and an alumna of the United Kingdom's Commonwealth Scholarship.
