Melinda Mushonga, MD
- Biography
Dr Melinda Mushonga is an early career practicing Clinical Oncologist from Zimbabwe with research interest on de-escalation of breast cancer treatment commensurate with diverse biology of breast cancer. Stems from a need to reduce costs of cancer treatment to improve access in settings where patients pay out of pocket. She has conducted foundational research from a LMIC setting aimed at identifying patterns of practice and system level barriers to implementing individualized and de-escalated treatments in breast cancer patients. Future research will focus on building evidence base from clinical trials conducted in low resource settings on de-escalation of cancer treatment to improve access to cancer care.
She is a member of numerous cancer organizations and recipient of prestigious awards including the Africa Cancer Leader Institute award for African Organization of Cancer Research and Training (AORTIC), Africa Clinical Trials Consortium National Cancer Institute (NCI) award, Global Oncology Leadership Development (GOLD) Princess Margaret Hospital award, University of Toronto Fellowship award, Radiation Oncology program, ASCO Journal editorial fellowship (2021-2022) among others. An enthusiastic cancer advocate with a keen interest in Global Oncology who works closely with Cancer serve trust in Zimbabwe an organization that raises awareness on cancer and assist in securing resources for treatment.
Her career goal is to contribute to work that narrows disparities in clinical outcomes of breast cancer patients in marginalized societies an area where tremendous advances have been made in other settings through clinical research and evidence-based interventions that promote awareness, early treatment and access to treatment.
