Dr. Melisa Boersma earned her B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University, an M.S. in Biochemistry from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and her M.D. with a residency in Radiation Oncology from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. She is a Clinical Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Kansas Comprehensive Cancer Center (KUCC) and serves as Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology at the KUCC North location in Kansas City, MO.
Dedicated to expanding access to state-of-the-art cancer care, particularly for vulnerable populations, Dr. Boersma has been an active voice in national advocacy through ASTRO, serving on the State Captains Initiative, the Government Relations Committee, and the Rural Task Force. At KUCC, she directs Hospice, Palliative Care, and Ethics for the Department of Radiation Oncology, providing education on palliative radiotherapy, communication in serious illness, and the care of patients with advanced cancer.
Dr. Boersma contributes to KUCC’s research mission through clinical trial enrollment and was recognized with the NCORP Silver Certificate of Excellence (2024) for her leadership in community-based oncology research. She also champions physician wellness, serving as departmental lead on the University of Kansas Health System’s Physician Well-Being Task Force.
Board certified in both Radiation Oncology (ABR) and Hospice & Palliative Medicine (AAHPM/ABIM), Dr. Boersma combines clinical expertise with a commitment to compassionate, equitable cancer care and physician well-being.
