EDU 14 - Re-Irradiation in Gastrointestinal Malignancies: Finding the Goldilocks Zone of "Just Right" Personalized Treatment

08:00am - 09:00am PT

MODERATOR(S)

Kevin Du, MD, PhD, MS - Yale School of Medicine

session DESCRIPTION

With increasing systemic therapy options for gastrointestinal cancer patients, re-irradiation in gastrointestinal cancers is an increasingly important treatment strategy. Gastrointestinal cancers are often aggressive and associated with high recurrence rates, including locoregional recurrences where effective treatment options may be limited. Re-irradiation offers the possibility of improved tumor control, alleviating pain or obstruction, and may potentially improve survival. It is critical for oncologists to learn about the appropriate use of re-irradiation in this challenging patient population. This session will give a clinical overview of commonly encountered clinical scenarios in gastrointestinal cancer patients where re-irradiation may help improve patient outcomes.

learning objectives

  1. Discuss appropriate recommendations for re-irradiation for locally recurrent/progressing esophageal cancers.
  2. Discuss appropriate recommendations for re-irradiation for locally recurrent/progressing rectal cancers.
  3. Discuss appropriate use of re-irradiation for recurrent/multiple liver tumors.
