EDU 29 - Empowering Patients through Innovation: Enhancing Cancer Education with Digital Tools
MODERATOR(S)
Trudy Wu, MD, BS - University of California Los Angeles
session DESCRIPTION
This engaging panel discussion will explore cutting-edge digital approaches to patient education, bringing together the expertise of radiation oncologists and the invaluable perspective of a patient advocate. Moderated by the host of a renowned radiation oncology podcast, the session will delve into the intersection of clinical expertise, technological innovation, and patient experience to address the challenges and opportunities in educating cancer patients. Panelists include two radiation oncologists who are pioneering digital education tools: one has developed TED-Ed content designed to demystify stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brain tumor patients, while the other has built a robust patient education platform that garners over 3,000 monthly visitors, offering both standard-of-care and clinical trial-specific content to improve recruitment. Joining them is a patient advocate diagnosed with EGFR-positive lung cancer at age 39, whose lived experience navigating education as a young mother of four small children highlights the gaps and opportunities in current practices. Her extensive involvement with patient advisory boards and cooperative research groups, including ECOG-ACRIN, provides a unique lens on how patients engage with clinical trial information. Together, the panel will discuss the pitfalls of traditional patient education, share best practices to maximally leverage digital content, and present innovative solutions to improve understanding and engagement in clinical research. This session aims to inspire actionable change in how the oncology community leverages digital tools to empower patients in their cancer journey.
learning objectives
- Identify key challenges in current patient education practices, including their impact on patient understanding, staff workload, and clinical trial enrollment, and recognize the need for innovative solutions.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of digital tools, such as doctor-created animated videos, in enhancing patient education for standard-of-care treatments and clinical trial participation, and explore best practices for implementing these strategies in clinical practice.
