session DESCRIPTION
Using administrative claims data routinely collected for billing purposes, investigators have access to a wealth of health care utilization and health outcomes information for large populations. For studies of cancer treatment safety, these data can be used to compare toxicities between treatment regimens or study adverse events that have never been formally evaluated in a prospective trial. For health services research, these data can be used to assess disparities, inefficiencies in health care delivery, and the financial impact of different treatment strategies. This session will provide radiation oncologists with background in the methods and contemporary applications of claims-based research. Attendees will understand how to evaluate data sources (e.g., SEER-Medicare) for appropriateness, critically appraise results of studies of health care disparities and treatment efficacy/safety, and design their own future studies.
learning objectives
- Describe the strengths and limitations of using claims data in radiation oncology research.
- Determine the appropriate tools for utilizing claims to answer their research questions.
- Design their own study of radiation therapy policy, economics or safety using claims.
