EDU 46 - Perioperative Immunotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer: Trial Data, Real-World Practice and Radiation Oncology Implications

TBD
02:15pm - 03:30pm ET

MODERATOR(S)

Carmen Kut, MD, PhD - Johns Hopkins

session DESCRIPTION

For the first time in two decades, two pivotal randomized trials (KEYNOTE 689 and NIVOPOSTOP) have proposed a new therapeutic regimen which demonstrated superiority over standard of care chemoradiation in patients with locally advanced, surgically resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Perioperative immunotherapy is now incorporated within NCCN guidelines and FDA approved for head and neck cancer patients whose tumors express PD-L1. While perioperative immunotherapy is reshaping the treatment paradigm in resectable head and neck cancer, many questions remain and new challenges arise. For example, what is the ideal timing for adding immunotherapy (neoadjuvant, adjuvant, or both)? How does one approach perioperative management for oral cavity patients versus other head and neck subsites? How does perioperative immunotherapy influences decisions about treatment volumes both surgically and from the radiation oncology perspective? In this session, we bring together a multidisciplinary panel including a radiation oncologist (from the NIVOPOSTOP trial), medical oncologist (from the KEYNOTE-689 trial) and surgical oncologist who is also a leading expert in cancer immunotherapy. Through a series of short lectures and case-based discussions, the panel will present recent pivotal data, explore current knowledge gaps and discuss best clinical practices.

learning objectives

  1. Review recent pivotal data and explore current knowledge gaps on perioperative immunotherapy for head and neck cancers.
  2. Discuss best clinical practices when incorporating immunotherapy into standard of care for head and neck cancer.
  3. Assess how perioperative immunotherapy influences decisions around radiation planning.
