Shinya Hiraoka, MD, PhD, is a Program-Specific Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Kyoto University Hospital in Kyoto, Japan. He received his medical degree from Okayama University in 2015 and his PhD from Kyoto University in 2026.
His clinical practice focuses on head and neck, esophageal, and gynecologic cancers. His research aims to improve cancer control while minimizing treatment-related toxicity through advanced radiotherapy techniques and individualized treatment strategies. In head and neck cancer, his interests include treatment de-escalation, elective nodal irradiation, and the effects of radiotherapy on the tumor immune microenvironment. His research also encompasses advanced treatment planning for cardiac sparing in esophageal cancer and PET/MRI imaging-guided brachytherapy for cervical cancer.
Dr. Hiraoka has authored peer-reviewed publications on radiotherapy techniques, clinical outcomes, and treatment de-escalation. He participates in the Japan Clinical Oncology Group Head and Neck Cancer Study Group and contributes to clinical practice guideline development for head and neck and esophageal cancers in Japan.
