Simona F. Shaitelman, MD, EdM, is Professor of Breast Radiation Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She has a strong interest in targeted radiation treatments and in the interaction of radiation, breast cancer, and the tumor microenvironment. She is currently the principal investigator of clinical trials examining the role of ablative radiotherapy to potentially replace surgery in biologically favorable breast cancers, an investigation to understand the nanomechanical changes elicited by radiotherapy to intact, fungating breast tumors, and a prospective cohort study of adjuvant radiotherapy with omission of endocrine therapy following lumpectomy for luminal A breast cancers. She is the Founding Director of the Division of Radiation Oncology’s Biomarker Strategic Initiative Laboratory, through which she oversees the collection and processing of biospecimens across multiple types of cancer, with the primary goal of better elucidating the systemic impact of radiation. She has served as Vice Chair of the ASTRO Partial Breast Irradiation Clinical Practice Guideline Task Force and as Co-Chair of the Breast Oncology Local Disease (BOLD) Task Force of the NCI Breast Cancer Steering Committee. She has an active role as an educator in our residency program, serving as Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee and has been honored with the MD Anderson James D. Cox Mentorship Award. Her ultimate goal is to use radiation as a biological tool to optimize clinical outcomes for patients with breast cancer and to train and inspire the next generation of physician scientists.
