Søren M. Bentzen, Professor and Director, Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health; Professor of Radiation Oncology, University of Maryland School of Medicine; Director, Biostatistics Shared Service, Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center; Director, Biostatistics Core, UMB Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.


Søren earned a M.Sc. in physics and mathematics (1981), Ph.D. in medical image analysis (1986), D.M.Sc. in clinical radiobiology (1994), all from Aarhus University, Denmark. He published >540 papers and book chapters and presented >370 invited lectures. Citation metrics (Google Scholar): >45,000 citations, h-index=111. Currently serves on 10 international cancer journal editorial boards. Søren is one of only 3 individuals who received both the ASTRO Gold Medal (2017) and ESTRO Breuer Gold Medal (2003). He received 33 awards and honors in total, including the Canadian Association for Radiation Oncology Honorary Award (2015), MD Anderson Distinguished Alumnus Award (2008), Medal of Outstanding International Achievement from the British Institute of Radiology (2023), and Honorary Life Memberships of Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (2008), Belgian Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (2009), German Society for Radio-oncology, DEGRO (2020). Fellow of ASTRO 2018.


Appointments include MD Anderson Cancer Center (1987-1988), Danish Cancer Society/Aarhus University (1988-1997), Gray Laboratory/Mount Vernon Hospital, London (1998-2004), Honorary Professor, University College London (2000-2005), University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (2005-2013). Main research interests: late effects of radiotherapy; clinical radiobiology; integrating data from genomics, proteomics, molecular imaging into novel radiation-therapy strategies; bioeffect modeling; biomathematics; biostatistics; clinical trial design; evidence-based medicine.
