Wouter van Elmpt, PhD

MAASTRO Clinic
Maastricht, Drenthe

Wouter van Elmpt is program manager of the physics innovation team at Maastro (Maastricht, NL) and is appointed as professor at Tilburg University for the endowed chair on "Implementation of AI in Healthcare Organizations" at TiSEM/ISOM. He holds a MSc degree (Applied Physics, TU Eindhoven, 2004), obtained his PhD at Maastricht University (FHML, 2009) and is specialized in advanced imaging acquisition/analysis and treatment of cancer patients. Furthermore, he has an honorary position as assistant professor at Maastricht University since January 2015.

Dr. van Elmpt is section editor for physics of the Radiotherapy and Oncology journal (Elsevier) and involved in many national and international committees on implementation of AI in healthcare. He published over 180 peer-reviewed publications and more than 200 abstracts/conference presentations and is work package leader and (co-)investigator on several national, company and European Union funded projects. He is the senior author on the guideline for the implementation of AI in clinical radiotherapy routine practice.

Currently his main focus is the implementation of innovation and research in routine clinical practice by leading an innovation team of different disciplines (e.g. physicist, physicians, technicians, engineers and IT) to advance radiotherapy techniques for patient care. Also, the implementation of Artificial Intelligence solutions in the routine clinical care path of cancer patients at MAASTRO is in his area of expertise. Focusing on strategies for implementation and evaluation of novel technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, supported by scientific insights is at the core of his work at Tilburg University.
