Dr. Matthew J. Thoonkuzhy is Chief Resident in the combined Radiation Oncology residency program at Tufts Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. He earned his MD from Drexel University College of Medicine and his BA in Religious Studies and Pre-Medicine from Lehigh University through its seven-year accelerated program. Prior to residency, he completed a general surgery internship at Loyola University Medical Center.
Dr. Thoonkuzhy's academic focus spans radiation oncology medical education and thoracic and functional radiosurgery. He is a member of the ARRO Education Subcommittee, where he has helped develop national EPAs for residency training. He also designed a multidisciplinary oncoanatomy curriculum recognized with Tufts Medical Center's 2025 Educator of the Year Award. His research includes institutional outcomes studies on Gamma Knife retreatment dosing for trigeminal neuralgia as well as stereotactic body radiotherapy for pediatric pulmonary metastases, with findings presented at ASTRO, ESTRO, and the ROECSG Annual Symposium.
