Melissa Vyfhuis, MD, PhD
Dr. Vyfhuis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine (UMSOM). She is also Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at the new Center for Advanced Medicine at the University of Maryland, Capital Region Medical Center. Dr. Vyfhuis is also the Chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee in Radiation Oncology. Her research focuses on cancer inequities and designing practical, clinical interventions to improve cancer care in historically marginalized groups. Such efforts include:
- Teaming with key stake holders to improve food insecurity in patients with cancer that predominantly reside in zip-code designated food priority areas (food deserts)
- Improving the recruitment and retention of Black patients onto clinical trials by addressing important psychosocial barriers
- Addressing the inequities in pain control in our Black patient population with cancer - establishing a cancer-oriented pain clinic
