EDU 12 - Measuring and Communicating the Value of Radiation Oncology

08:00am - 09:00am ET

MODERATOR(S)

Eli Sapir, MD - Samsson Assuta Ashdod University Hospital

session DESCRIPTION

This session, "Measuring and Communicating the Value of Radiation Oncology," will explore how to define, measure and convey the value of radiotherapy within modern cancer care. Dr. Cary Gross will open by explaining how comparative effectiveness research can clarify the relative benefits of radiation therapy compared with other treatment options. Kwabena Asare will then provide an overview of existing oncology value frameworks, summarizing core concepts and highlighting how current tools often emphasize drug-based endpoints such as overall and progression-free survival. Dr. Ronald Ennis will close by discussing the impact of value assessments in treatment reimbursement decisions and how to effectively articulate the benefit of radiation oncology in a competitive health care environment. Aligned with the meeting theme, "Data to Dialogue: Communicating Radiotherapy's Value to Advance Care," the session will show how data-driven value assessments can be translated into clear, practical messaging. By examining the limitations of drug-centric frameworks and reviewing emerging systems like ESTRO's VBRO model, the presenters will underscore the need for value frameworks that fully capture the benefits of local treatments — such as organ preservation, functional outcomes, hospitalizations, and local tumor control — and enable fair comparisons across all cancer interventions.

learning objectives

  2. Discuss the value of radiation oncology in the context of existing frameworks.
