session DESCRIPTION
Thoracic neuroendocrine tumors represent a biologically diverse and clinically challenging group of malignancies that span indolent typical carcinoids to highly aggressive small cell and large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas. Rapid advances in molecular classification, imaging and therapeutics have fundamentally reshaped how these tumors are diagnosed and managed, yet optimal care increasingly requires close multidisciplinary coordination. This educational session will provide a comprehensive, practice-oriented update on the contemporary management of thoracic neuroendocrine tumors, integrating perspectives from radiation oncology, surgery and medical oncology. Expert faculty will highlight modern radiation techniques and indications across disease stages, discuss surgical decision making in localized and oligometastatic settings, and examine the expanding role of systemic and radioligand therapies in advanced disease. Through evidence-based discussion and real-world clinical insights, this session aims to equip practicing clinicians with the knowledge needed to deliver precision, multidisciplinary care for patients with thoracic neuroendocrine tumors in an era of rapidly changing standards.
learning objectives
- Determine optimal indications and sequencing of radiation therapy and surgery for thoracic neuroendocrine tumors across localized, locally advanced, and metastatic disease settings based on current evidence and expert practice patterns.
- Apply contemporary systemic and radioligand treatment strategies to individual patient scenarios, including selection of candidates, timing relative to local therapy, and management of treatment-related toxicities.
- Implement a coordinated, multidisciplinary care model to improve treatment integration, referral pathways, and guideline-concordant decision making for patients with thoracic neuroendocrine tumors.
