01:00pm - 02:15pm ET

MODERATOR(S)

Virginia Diavolitsis, MD - Riverside Radiation Oncology Inc.

session DESCRIPTION

Management of oral cavity head and neck squamous cell carcinomas has evolved over the last several decades as new surgical and radiation techniques have been developed, immunotherapy has been introduced, and technology has been developed to prevent or mitigate side effects from treatment. In this session, a head and neck surgeon will discuss the role of surgical management in oral cavity cancers. We will also discuss post-surgical radiation therapy and the emerging data on immunotherapy in oral cavity cancer patients. Finally, we will discuss management techniques to prevent and minimize toxicity from radiation therapy in the head and neck.

learning objectives

  1. Explain the rationale for using surgery as the primary modality for head and neck cancers and assess that a proper surgery was performed.
  2. Describe indications for use of postoperative radiation therapy in oral cavity cancers.
  3. Describe preventative and treatment-related techniques to minimize morbidity during and after head and neck radiation.
