MODERATOR(S)
Stuart Burri, MD - Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute
session DESCRIPTION
In the session we will explore the appropriate planning margins for tumors of the CNS including brain metastases in conventional radiation as well as stereotactic treatments in the era of modern imaging. The session will discuss the pros and cons of tighter and more generous margins in regard to tumor control as well as toxicity. Many of the current expansion margins date back decades and we will explore if these still make sense with improvements in modern equipment and imaging. The session will be structured as an interactive point counterpoint between two expert physicians with input from an expert physicist, as well as the moderator. In a PRO session on re-irradiation last year there was captivating discussion of margins that led to a vigorous debate and there was audience feedback that it would be beneficial to explore the use of margins in CNS therapy in the initial therapy setting, which was the impetus for the ideation of the session.
learning objectives
- Understand and appropriately develop expansion planning margins for their patients.
- Utilize advanced imaging for contouring of tumor targets to optimize tumor control while minimizing toxicity.
- Understand the precision level of modern equipment to appropriately take that into account with the other clinical factors in the development of targets.
