PRO 08 - The Continued Need of Radiation Therapy in Rectal Cancer: From Early to Late Stage Disease

session DESCRIPTION

This session will be comprised of a panel of three academic radiation oncologists spanning different geographic locations including an international perspective. The session will review the three most common clinical scenarios of rectal cancer that are seen in the community. We will begin discussing the role of radiation therapy in the non-operative setting. The speaker will cover the role of definitive radiation in both early and locally advanced setting as well discussing treatment technique and dose considerations and current surveillance guidelines. Then we will discuss the continued value of radiation therapy in the neoadjuvant setting including covering data from the PROSPECT trial, discussing the sequencing of radiation in a TNT approach as well short course vs. long course radiation. Finally we will end the session with the role of radiation in the metastatic disease including defining oligometastatic disease in rectal cancer, metastatic directed therapies and treatment of the primary.

  1. Describe the role of radiation in different clinical scenarios of patients with rectal cancer.
  2. Explain the different radiation techniques and fractionation schemes that may be more appropriate for different clinical presentations.
