ST 02 - Radiation Care and Survivorship in the Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Population

05:00pm - 06:00pm PT

MODERATOR(S)

Fumiko Chino, MD - MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston

session DESCRIPTION

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients (those diagnosed and treated for cancer between the ages of 15 and 40) have a high burden of treatment toxicities and unique health-related quality of life concerns. Chronic toxicities may cause significant morbidity given AYAs potential for many decades of survivorship post-treatment. There is limited awareness of the unique concerns and disparities experienced by the AYA population during treatment with radiation and throughout survivorship. Recognizing these limitations and disparities within the AYA cancer population is becoming increasingly important as AYA cancer incidence is increasing. Our session aims to fill these gaps by increasing awareness, presenting the current available data, and suggesting future studies to further understand the needs of AYAs undergoing cancer treatment. Our panelists are a combination of oncologists who treat AYAs from both the academic and community setting, and we will also introduce an AYA patient who received radiation therapy to get their perspective of the treatment process firsthand. Finally, our session will introduce research ideas, resources and early interventions that may help provide some guidance for meeting the survivorship needs of this vulnerable population.

learning objectives

  1. Describe the unique needs and disparities to care that currently exist in the AYA cancer population, including sub-populations at-risk for worse HRQOL during treatment.
  2. Describe the long-term toxicity profile and HRQOL that AYA patients experience during the survivorship period after RT and discuss interventions that mitigate the long-term consequences of radiation.
  3. Discuss research opportunities in the AYA cancer population and how to leverage the unique position of being an AYA with enrollment in combined pediatric/adult oncology clinical trials and accelerated access to modern technologies.
