EDU 05 - Challenging Cases in Pediatric/AYA Sarcomas: Contemporary Approaches and Novel Technologies (SBRT/PULSAR, GRID/SFRT, Adaptive Radiotherapy)
MODERATOR(S)
Kiran Kumar, MD, MBA - UT Southwestern Medical Center
session DESCRIPTION
Pediatric and adolescent and young adult (AYA) sarcomas are a diverse and complex group of diseases requiring multidisciplinary management and patient-centered treatment recommendations. As a group, they are the most common extra-cranial solid-tumor malignancy in children and AYAs, however, they are quite heterogenous with a variety of constantly evolving treatment paradigms. There are often multiple treatment options aimed at balancing tumor control with treatment morbidity, but limited high-quality data exist to guide treatment decisions. The goal of this educational session is to discuss challenging cases in the most common types of pediatric/AYA sarcomas and use these cases as a framework to review current best practices, ongoing studies, and future directions with regards to the value of radiotherapy in the management of these diseases. The panel will discuss and debate various treatment approaches, giving the audience the opportunity to hear multiple perspectives based on current and ongoing data as well as personal experience. Each case will include practical teaching points, contouring and planning tips, and examples of novel approaches such as protons, adaptive radiotherapy, GRID/SFRT and SBRT/PULSAR. The audience will be highly encouraged to ask questions and actively participate in each case discussion.
learning objectives
- Explain the value of radiotherapy in the management of localized and metastatic Ewing sarcoma, fusion-positive rhabdomyosarcoma, high-grade NRSTS and oligometastatic disease.
- Describe the use of novel radiotherapy technologies and techniques such as protons, SBRT/PULSAR, GRID/SFRT, and adaptive radiotherapy to improve outcomes and reduce long-term toxicities in the treatment of pediatric/AYA sarcomas.
