session DESCRIPTION

Over a million patients are treated each year with radiation, and tens of millions of survivors were previously treated with radiation. Nurses are the largest single group of health care professionals in the U.S., and APs are a fast-growing population in health care. Until recently, there was limited, if any, opportunities for radiation oncology content in their preparation. That limited their potential contributions to this field. While many benefits are available for physicians, departments and patients, there has been limited attention paid to creating effective teams with these team members who have not traditionally been part of radiation oncology. Specific areas of growth in the nursing, NP and PA roles involve radiopharmaceuticals, brachytherapy, multimodality coordination of care and patient education. Recently, nurses have collaborated with brachytherapy experts to create the first education programs on brachytherapy for nurses to inform and transform the role of nurses in brachytherapy here in the U.S. and around the world. The first-ever credential validating knowledge of American radiation oncology nurses is being launched this year. The first-ever national program for radiation oncology NPs and PAs was launched last year, and for the first time, a national society chapter was established to improve preparation and competence in radiation oncology for these professionals. We will offer information that will benefit radiation oncologists and their departments looking to onboard nurses and APs, and those wanting to positively impact their patients and their practice through multidisciplinary team development.
