EDU 27 - Fertility Preservation and Family Building across Cancer Care: Practical Strategies for Diverse Patient Needs

03:00pm - 04:00pm ET

MODERATOR(S)

Jason Domogauer, MD, PhD - NYU Langone Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center

session DESCRIPTION

Advances in cancer treatment have led to improved survival across disease sites, making fertility preservation and family building an increasingly important component of high-quality oncology care. Professional guidelines recommend that all patients of reproductive age receive counseling regarding potential treatment-related infertility and available preservation options; however, implementation remains inconsistent, and disparities persist across clinical settings. This education session will equip radiation oncology professionals with practical strategies to identify fertility risks, initiate timely conversations, and coordinate care with fertility specialists across a broad range of patient circumstances. The session will emphasize adolescent and young adult populations and highlight how social, cultural, financial and systemic factors influence access to fertility preservation and family-building services. Through case-based discussion and evidence-informed frameworks, speakers will address common clinical barriers, communication challenges and resource constraints encountered in real-world practice. Attendees will gain tools to support shared decision making, improve documentation and referral pathways, and deliver patient-centered care that is responsive to diverse values and life goals. This session is designed for clinicians seeking actionable guidance to enhance survivorship-focused care while meeting established standards for quality and equity in oncology practice.
