EDU 56 - Challenging Cases: The Evolving Role of Radiation Therapy for Rare Genitourinary Cancers

08:00am - 09:00am ET

MODERATOR(S)

Omar Mian, MD, PhD - Fred Hutchinson Research Center

session DESCRIPTION

Rare genitourinary malignancies present significant diagnostic and therapeutic hurdles and cumulatively account for a considerable proportion of patients seen in radiation oncology. Management of rare GU malignancies requires a high degree of coordination between urologic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists. This session utilizes a case-based approach to explore the clinical decision making process for orphan GU tumors including penile cancer, urethral tumors, testicular cancer and adrenocortical carcinoma. These malignancies present significant diagnostic and therapeutic hurdles and emphasis will be placed on the importance of multi-specialty collaboration to improve outcomes. An expert multi-disciplinary panel will review the latest evidence-based interventions, discuss the role of molecular profiling in personalized care, and identify strategies for managing treatment-related toxicities in these complex patients.

learning objectives

  1. Identify and differentiate the unique histopathological features and clinical presentations of rare GU malignancies (e.g., urethral cancer, testicular cancer, and penile squamous cell carcinoma).
  2. Evaluate current evidence-based strategies and expert consensus recommendations for the management of rare GU tumors, including where high-quality randomized controlled trial data are unavailable.
  3. Develop individualized treatment plans that integrate surgical, systemic and radiation therapies, specifically focusing on the utility of emerging biomarkers and the sequencing of novel agents like immunotherapy and targeted inhibitors.
