International 04 - Challenges and Solutions of Implementing New Radiotherapy Advanced Techniques in LMIC

TBD
12:30pm - 01:45pm ET

MODERATOR(S)

M. Dolores De La Mata Moya, MD, PhD, MPH - Centro Medico ABC

session DESCRIPTION

This session will share institutional experiences highlighting successful implementation of advanced radiotherapy techniques in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite significant disparities in access to radiotherapy and technological resources, many centers in resource-constrained settings have developed innovative, scalable and context-adapted solutions that allow the safe and effective delivery of modern radiation treatments. The session will describe the development of real-world institutional projects, outlining the clinical, technical, organizational and financial challenges encountered during implementation. Key barriers such as limited infrastructure, workforce shortages, training gaps, regulatory constraints and sustainability concerns will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the strategies used to overcome these obstacles, including phased implementation, multidisciplinary collaboration, capacity building and adaptation of international guidelines to local realities. Through case-based examples, speakers will highlight measurable outcomes, quality and safety considerations and long-term program sustainability. By openly sharing challenges, lessons learned and practical insights, this session aims to provide actionable guidance for radiation oncology teams working in LMICs who seek to implement new technologies while maintaining high standards of care in resource-limited environments.

learning objectives

  1. Describe successful institutional projects that demonstrate the implementation of advanced radiotherapy techniques in low- and middle-income countries, highlighting key factors that contributed to their success.
  2. Analyze practical tools, strategies and resource-adapted approaches used to implement radiotherapy technologies in middle- and low-income settings, considering clinical, technical and organizational constraints.
  3. Determine evidence-based recommendations and actionable strategies to overcome common barriers to implementation and to support the successful adoption and sustainability of new radiotherapy technologies in resource-limited environments.
